What Juicer do I need to fast?

by Julianne Dowse
Obviously, you need a juicer to do a juice fast. No, not a smoothie maker – a juicer. But not just any juicer will do, if you are juicing for health and wanting to nourish, nurture and support your body to heal then you need to make sure your juicer will produce quality, nutrient-rich juice!

My Recommendation

As a foodie. Juice must taste good. I mean to say, if I am going to give up all of those delicious foods and drinks for a period of time – they need to be replaced by nourishing juices that taste amazing – right?

Right!

So, my juicer of choice is a cold-pressed (or slow) juicer.

Why?

Because, it’s the best.

When you juice with a cold pressed juicer, no heat is created. What this means is, no oxidation of fruit or vegetable occurs, and you get a nutrient-rich and colour-filled juice!

And, given the fact we actually first eat with our eyes – juice must also look good, taste good and be good.

Which is why I recommend and support the Kuvings Cold Press Juicer.

They are the premium juicer on the market and have been voted No 1 by Choice Magazine (so, don’t just take my word for it).

But, before you dash off to Kuvings to check out their range – let me explain the difference between a juicer and a smoothie/blender. And, give you some more detail on the difference between centrifugal and cold pressed (or slow) juicers.

What’s the difference between juicing and blending?

Juices and smoothies require different equipment. Here’s a breakdown:

Juicers have blades or gears that grate and grind produce.

  • A juicer spins or squeezes your juice out of the produce pulp
  • The pulp is separated from the juice
  • Prep for juicing is easy – just wash your produce and put it in whole through your juicer

Blenders still have a blade, but the similarities end there.

  • A blender pulverizes the ingredients
  • The pulp stays in the smoothie and makes it thicker
  • Smoothie ingredients can sometimes require more prep – some blenders work better if you peel and chop your produce

A juicer will extract the juice and remove the pulp from your produce. What you’re left with is all of the liquid from your veggies and fruit, and none of the pulp.

A blender takes the whole veggies and fruit and pulverizes it into a thick drink. You get all of the liquid AND the pulp from your produce.

What about the fibre? Don’t I need it?

Whether you juice or make smoothies, you will still get some fibre. There are the two kinds of fibre—here’s how they work in your body:

Soluble fibre – This remains in your juice even when you take out the pulp.

Soluble fibre absorbs water in the intestines, forming a gel that helps slow the transit of food through your digestive tract. It also acts as pre-biotic to support healthy bacteria in the gut.

Insoluble fibre – This remains in your smoothie as the pulp.

Insoluble fibre makes you feel full because it literally takes up more room in your stomach. This fibre helps keep you regular. Since your body doesn’t absorb much of it, it also adds bulk to your stool.
